Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (#FTIR) is a powerful and versatile analytical technique for qualitative and quantitative #gasanalysis. By measuring the absorption of infrared light, gases present in a sample can be identified through library matching. Multivariate data reduction algorithms, most commonly Classical Least Squares (CLS), are often employed for the quantitative analysis and allow for the analysis of complex mixtures of gases, up to 30 components, from processes such as combustion. How much danger do #microplastics pose to developing fetuses and premature infants, even though the babies aren’t eating or drinking yet? A study aimed at estimating what amounts of microplastic particles (roughly 25-175 micrometers in size) can make their way into the babies’ bloodstream via IVs was set up to simulate the in vivo situation of #neonatal parenteral nutrition. The study used FTIR analysis, performed on an iN10 Infrared Microscope, to show that leaching from IV lines themselves might actually be a direct exposure route in humans, and in neonates in particular. But the same #FTIR analysis also showed that a simple in-line filter could prevent a significant portion of the microplastics from entering the neonates intravenously.
